Sigma's EM8622L advanced decoder engines support video decoding of H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10), Windows Media' Video 9, VC-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 (Part 2). NME's HD VMD players use the Sigma Designs EM8622L chip set for video processing, scaling, and decoding algorithms. VC-1 is clearly a superior compression scheme to MPEG-2, which is what most studios have predominantly used for Blu-ray video transfers since the inception of the Blu-ray format.

I think the multiple layers idea went out of the window somewhere in 2006.Īnd after dropping their original idea, they came with disks with encrypted mpeg2 video that can only hold 45 minutes or so. Everything else but the decoder is nothing more than a standard computer data DVD drive and some hardware for decoding video. They would never have had the budget to develop that.

The “upgraded firmware” would have been the inclusion of a decoder to play the VMD file format, not in the laser driver to read more layers. Techmoan says at the end that he thinks it would have been impressive to have data DVD’s that can store 20Gb with upgraded firmware, but I think he missed the point. In that way it’s like DivX, which also wasn’t really a format, but just DVD in a different codec (which is also why it failed). They probably meant it to be when they started, and may have had big plans in the beginning, with their multiple layers, but after a short amount of time, it seems like they gave up on the idea and just stuck with DVD dual layer and a proprietary video file format, wrapped up in overhyped marketing.
